about

I was born in Canada and grew up with this classic being played in the background of my life. During my youth I was taught that the fabled Northwest Passage would never be a shipping route, however due to climate change the ships that were lost from the Franklin expedition have been found, transport ships are being built to take advantage of the loss of sea ice and it is even becoming a tourist destination. This change in the world is deadly for us all so I have adapted the verses of the song to reflect our current reality.

lyrics

Chorus

Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea;
Tracing one warm line through a land so wide and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea.

Verse

Three centuries thereafter, we have warmed the earth
Leaving me to wonder how much gold and glory's worth
The pack ice gone the water clear the passageway sits free
And the Orient is but a cruise to the sea

Terrors final resting place is found beneath the waves
A note catches the last words of souls that no one saved
The Erebus was found on tails passed from man to boy
But finding of the graves brings no joy

Has our wish for free passage brought our own downfall
Will the warming up the earth cost be a price to tall
As nature wreaks it's havoc, and disasters wreck the land
Flood, fire, and disease, this is now the plan

So the Northwest passage now sits clear and free
Can we learn to leave the last of the oil beneath the sea
Have learned the cost of spending far more than we earn
Or will gold and glory make the world burn
